What Over The Counter Sleeping Pills Do You Take?

I want to talk about sleeping pills today because sleep deprivation is what I’ve been dealing with lately. First things first though- my Dad’s appointment went well. There is no cancer in his bladder and we are all very happy and grateful for that! (and thank you for all the well wishes and support! xx)

The drive ended up being a non-issue, because my husband generously offered to take the day off to be the chauffeur. That was an unexpected surprise and I was happy to accept! I know he is making good efforts to show up and do the right thing. So yes I’ll take that.

But you know what really sucked? Remember I said there was no way in hell I was going to be sleep deprived for this stressful day? And that I was going to take my Valerian 2 nights in a row beforehand? Well Sunday night I slept well. But on Monday night I slept horribly.

I was no doubt stressed about the trip and having my parents stay over and whatnot. When I laid down to sleep I took my trusty Valerian. But sleep didn’t come for quite a long time. And I woke up at least twice.

Now I know, for me, over the counter sleep aids don’t work well if you have to take them for more than one night. But I thought since have been taking the Tart Cherry Juice for my hip pain (it has melatonin in it), it would work in conjunction with the Valerian. But now that I think about it, since I drink it in the morning I guess it didn’t really help. What I should have done was switched to a different sleep aid for night 2.

Anxiety sufferers often deal with insomnia, so it’s good to have some safe, over-the-counter sleep aids on hand. When you know you’re in for a stressful few days, it’s important to rotate them- for example, take Valerian one night and take something else on the next night. This is what I will definitely do next time for sure.

Valerian RootThis is the Valerian Root I take and it usually works great.

Valerian root is part of the Valerian plant that our ancestors used to chew on for its soothing properties. It goes all the way back to Ancient Greece! It has sedative and anti-anxiety effects and is an effective natural sleep aid.

People use Valerian root for anxiety, restlessness, and for sleep. I use it for sleep. 1 pill at bedtime does the trick. I usually take this once a week and sleep well with it most of the night.

It is said that Valerian is known for its distinctive odor. That is putting it lightly. It smells like poop! I have to hold my breath when I open the bottle, it is that bad. If you can deal with the smell, it is totally worth it.

As I said this usually works like a charm- for me, that means taking it once a week, but not for more than one night in a row.

The best thing about Valerian root is that you wake up rested with no hangover. So you don’t suffer the next day.

The other sleep aid I take, but only occasionally, is Advil PM. This will work, but you do have to take it early in the evening or else you will still be groggy and feel hung over the next day. This is one I save for when my allergies act up, because the diphenhydramine is an antihistamine. So when my eyes are all bugged out from pollen, this will take care of the itchy eyes and also give me a good night’s rest.
Advil PM
Tylenol PM will also work the same as far a sleep aid and allergy reliever. I just happen to prefer ibuprofen (which is in Advil PM) over Tylenol, because I like that it is anti-inflammatory, and I am always swollen or hurting somewhere these days it seems. 😛

One reader swears by Sleep Tonight by Enzymatic Therapy. Some of the reviews on Amazon say it helps with sleep interruptions, helps you fall back to sleep if you get up, and still wake up feeling well rested and refreshed. Other reviews said it didn’t work well or at all.

The product description for Sleep Tonight says: “Everyday stressors cause natural stress hormones in your body to become elevated. Sleep Tonight helps activate your body’s relaxation response to return stress hormones to healthy levels – both night and day.”

There was a link on the Sleep Tonight page at Amazon that said “What do customers buy after viewing this item?”…And it brought me to this:

Suntheanine® L-Theanine 200mg (Double-Strength) in Cold-Pressed Organic Coconut Oil; Non-GMO & Gluten Free – 60 Liquid Softgel

L-Theanine

This brand of  L-Theanine has over 70% 5 Star reviews, which is really good for any supplement. It is promoted as an anti anxiety aid, and it is also used as a sleep aid.

Suntheanine® L-Theanine is clinically proven to promote an alert state of relaxation without drowsiness, as indicated by an increase in Alpha brain waves. Under the product indications it states that it “Supports relaxation without drowsiness.”  And then it says it “may improve sleep quality.

And the manufacturer offers a 90 day money back guarantee! So that is very cool.:)

Here is just one 5 Star Review:

“What can I say, I love this stuff!! I’m not sure how much this helps with anxiety, but it has helped me sleep so much better at night. Every time I take this in the evening or right before I go to bed I sleep extremely well, EVERY TIME. I can also tell when I forget to take it, I wake up multiple times at night tossing and turning. Definitely recommend.”

So I am definitely now interested in Suntheanine® L-Theanine. Have you ever tried it?

Are there other over the counter sleeping pills you can recommend?

Leave a comment & let’s talk.

I always look forward to your questions & updates!

I wish you peace,

Jill G.

Yes I love l-theanine for anxiety I take it every morning when I wake up, I like the brand above but I like the Doctors best brand even more I can honestly feel it working : Doctor’s Best Suntheanine L-Theanine (150mg) Vegetable Capsules, 90-Count

For sleeping I take this melatonin and it works really well for me : Schiff Melatonin Ultra. 300 Tablets. 3mg Melatonin + 25mg L-Theanine + 25mg GABA + Chamomile & Valerian Extracts

I actually took one last night and got 9 hours of interrupted sleep. I usually wake up feeling very anxious but this morning I felt very calm. It was definitely a nice change.

Thanks for weighing in Cortney. Personally, I’ve not had much luck with Melatonin pills, but the one you linked to has a lot of good customer reviews. Maybe I just took a crappy brand– anyhow, I’m glad it works for you. I will say I had never heard of L-Theanine until today, and it definitely has peaked my interest.
