When you can feel anxiety or a panic attack approaching, it’s helpful to have an arsenal of things to do mentally to diffuse the tension and prevent the panic attack.
One of the best tricks I know to prevent panic attacks is a wonderful ‘feeling’ exercise. The goal is to feel the inner body. It’s super easy to do and you can start right now. Let me explain.
Close your eyes for a moment and just try to feel the aliveness in your hands. By this I mean try to notice the subtle sensations within your hands, their aliveness, if you will.
This may register as a slight tingly sensation followed by a feeling of energy. If you keep the focus on your hands for a little longer, you will notice that these feelings will start to intensify.
After a little practice, you will be able to feel you inner hands without closing your eyes. Now go to your feet and do the same thing, feel their inner aliveness. This exercise can be done on any part of your body, your legs, arms, chest, abdomen.
This inner body awareness serves to anchor you in the present. By focusing on feeling, it will stop racing thoughts and is a real antidote to anxiety and panic. You can do this anywhere, anytime.
Try to feel your inner body several times throughout the day, for a few moments here and there. It is wonderful and restorative during peaceful times, and I want you to try this the next time you feel anxiety or panic coming on. I personally have used this to prevent panic attacks in many, many instances.
Practicing inner body awareness not only helps to prevent panic attacks and stop anxiety, it also strengthens your immune system and helps your body to heal itself. What a bonus 🙂
