Exercises for Anxiety Relief

Zumba Fitness Total Body Transformation DVDI have been doing exercises for anxiety relief for years. Last summer, going to the gym almost every day helped keep me serene- I was anxious at home and couldn’t find a job.

Research has long touted the amazing health benefits of exercise for mood and anxiety. So imagine my delight when I came across an article in my May 2012 issue of Self Magazine, about specific exercises for anxiety relief.

Here is the Anti Anxiety Exercise Plan:

  • 3 days of Moderately Intense Cardio (45-60 minutes) – Examples include brisk walking (with family, friend, or doggie), using an elliptical, intense house work
  • Plus 1 or 2 days of Vigorous- Intensity Exercise (30-45 minutes) – Examples include tennis, hip hop class, Zumba, Spinning, or Step Class
  • Plus 1 or 2 days of Calming Yoga (30-60 minutes)

The result? Anxiety relief and decreased panic attacks!

Vigorous exercise may be the key for people who have panic attacks. You experience rapid heartbeat and heavy breathing– the same symptoms that occur in anxiety. But when you exercise, you get accustomed to those symptoms and stop seeing them as negative.  – Jasper Smits, Ph.D

The proof:

Sharika Johnson – age 32, mom of 2, teacher & PR consultant – used this regimen to help with frequent panic attacks. After 3 weeks, she noticed she felt more energetic and had an easier time managing her anxiety. Before she began exercising, she suffered from several panic attacks a week. But she reported only having two mild ones during this program. 🙂

If you want to feel better, with exercise you can! And vigorous exercise doesn’t have to be intimidating.

Last summer I tried Zumba for the first time. It is such an incredibly fun workout. It is fast and upbeat, and the time goes by so fast! Since you are dancing to music, it doesn’t feel like exercise. Plus shaking your booty is fun and feels good too.

I cant tell you how amazing it feels- especially afterwards. 😀

Because of my work schedule, I can’t make the Zumba classes at the gym anymore. So I found a great Zumba workout DVD for home instead.

I chose the Zumba Fitness Total Body Transformation System DVD Set, which comes with the toning sticks too. I checked it all out, and even read the reviews – over 900 reviews were 4 and 5 star (good stuff!). If you watch the video on that page you can see how much FUN it is.

I especially like that it has a “20 Minute Express Workout”. This is great for quick morning workouts on the days I have to work early and want to give myself a nice boost before going in.

I’ve always loved dancing, and even dancing around the house when I’m cooking or cleaning so this workout is great for me. That it helps decrease my anxiety is icing on the cake. 🙂
