A reader asked:
Lexapro is making me hungry all of the time. Do you know of natural appetite suppressants to help with this? Thanks so much for your help!
Weight gain is a common side effect of taking antidepressants unfortunately.
I have experienced wait gain on antidepressants. I remember being on one years ago- I don’t even remember the name (wish I could) but my weight really ballooned – I put on over 30 pounds in about 4 months. I am not a large person by nature but I remember that summer I had to wear my husband’s clothes.
I remember I felt wonderful emotionally, but ultimately I went off that medication because I could not stand being so overweight. I hated not fitting into any of my clothes and no matter, what I could not stop eating. It was a difficult decision at the time but I went off that medication.
I currently take a low dose of generic Celexa and definitely have gained weight recently. I’m not out of control gaining weight like I did with that other medication, but all my clothes are tight and my thighs and tummy are starting to jiggle when I walk. Not. Fun..
I do exercise regularly and go to the gym, so it’s definitely time to add some natural appetite suppressants into my diet regimen.
Taking antidepressants adds an extra element into the mix that makes weight loss very, very hard.
Foods that are natural appetite suppressants make you feel fuller longer. Here is a brief list that you can incorporate into your diet:
Whey protein- adding this to your diet along with exercise helps reduce body fat and build lean muscle.
Soy nuts- soy nuts taste similar to peanuts. They are packed with fiber, which helps keeps blood sugar levels up so you don’t get hunger pangs. Easy to find in the natural foods section of the grocery store.
Flaxseed- I eat 3 Tbs of this every morning on my yogurt with frozen blueberries- delicious!
Pine nuts- “High in polyunsaturated fats, pine nuts may help you burn calories at a higher rate even when you’re not very being active. Eat 2 tablespoons 3 times a week.” - Dr. Oz
Spicy foods – hot spicy foods force you to eat slower. Capsaicin, the ingredient in most spicy foods is a natural appetite suppressant.
Apples- filled with bulky fiber, they fill you up and keep you satisfied in a pinch. Empire apples are my favorite, I always have a large bag in the fridge- I take them to work and keep one or two in the glove box too.
Green Tea- high in antioxidants, green tea can also help suppress appetite and some say it even helps burn fat. Note- green tea contains caffeine.
Oatmeal- the carbs in oatmeal fill you up and keep you feeling full by suppressing the hunger hormone ghrelin.
Almonds- just a small handful does the trick.
Eating right – (smaller portions, eating slowly) and regular exercise in combination with incorporating some of these foods into your diet is a key.
That is where I am at the moment- doing everything right (as far as I can tell), and yet the extra weight is still there.
Native Remedies offers a line of natural appetite suppressants. The one I am buying is called Slimmer’s Assist:
Here is a customer review of Slimmers assist:
Slimmers assist has really helped my metabolism. I’ve been taking slimmers assist for 3 months now (just ordered another 3 months worth) and I have definitely noticed a change in my eating habits. My body doesn’t want to eat as much as I use to. I am really happy with these pills and what they have done for me. The pills are really easy to take and taste good too. People have noticed that I lost some weight. and they ask me how I do it and I tell them Slimmers Assist. I have definitely recommended Native Remedies to plenty of people. I hope my review helped. – Kate

I have to say, Native Remedies products are very good (I recently purchased PureCalm and really like it.) They offer discounts and combo packs to save you money too.
Do you use any natural appetite suppressants? I look forward to hearing your results and I’ll share mine with you too!
I wish you peace,
Jill G.

I haven’t tried any appatite suppressants yet but think I might give this one a go. I’m usually really good during the day but by 9pm I always get the munchies and I’m in and out of the kitchen. So maybe this could be the answer to help me break this terrible habit.
I am only trying Slimmer’s Assist because it is natural and homeopathic. Evenings are my hard time too- good luck Susan
Crazy that I just ordered that too (Slimmer’s Assist) and started taking it this week! Great minds think alike and all that….
Let me know how it works for you Zoe!
Using Remeron for the past two years has really stabilized my anxiety, but the weight gain is incredibly high. I am choosing the med for now because I value my mood stability. However, I am not ready to add another health problem via weight gain, so thank you so much for this timely info. I am going to put it to good use immediately. Jill, you are a godsend to all of us!
It is so hard when you finally find something that helps and the side effect is weight gain. At least we can learn about making healthy choices with our food selections
. Thankfully your mood is stabilized Tammy- I applaud your decision to stay on the Remeron for now. Thank you for the kind comment also
