Will I Go Crazy Because of Panic Attacks?

can I go crazy because of panic attacksOk, so you’ve read a good book like Hope and Help for Your Nerves.*  Still, during panic attacks, you often feel as though you are going crazy.

Are you really losing touch with reality? Is it possible to lose your mind or get locked up because of anxiety and panic attacks?

The answer is simple.

You will NEVER go crazy or insane from panic attacks.

It just feels that way. The symptoms are absolutely terrifying and you may feel like you are on the very brink of death.

Thinking you are going crazy is very common among anxiety and panic attack sufferers.  We KNOW these horrendous feelings and disturbing thoughts are not normal.  We hate the feelings and feel we’d almost do anything not to ever have these awful episodes again. Why wouldn’t we think we were going crazy?

I was told by my psychiatrist years ago that I would never go crazy. He explained that one of the marks of a “crazy person” is that think they are normal and everyone else is not.  Moreover, the fact that I questioned my racing thoughts was actually pretty clear thinking ;)

Talk to your doctor, therapist, or support person

Don’t go at it alone. Expressing your honest feelings to a trusted person is very helpful and will relieve some of the stress. Keeping your feelings bottled up inside will only make you feel worse

KNOW that you are not alone, and that you absolutely will not go crazy or insane or get carted off to a psychiatric hospital because of panic attacks.

Many people with panic attacks can get relief and go on to leave productive happy lives.  I should know, I’m one of them ;)

I wish you peace,

Jill G.

If you are suffering from panic attacks, I urge you to try to help yourself. You can get better and you’re not going crazy. Panic tells us were going crazy but it’s just not true. If I believed what my anxious thoughts told me, I’d have been locked up in an insane asylum a thousand times or more. Please take care.
